When we’ve experienced chronic and/or complex trauma, our brains make remarkable efforts to protect us. We have been shown that is it not safe to be fully exposed as we are, because we’ve been hurt in doing so, so our nervous system is in distress, putting into place a system of defense to prevent the same hurt again. This can show up as substance use or compulsive behavior, codependency or avoidance, people-pleasing or aggression, and any other mental health diagnosis. All these behaviors and labels are similar, in that they’re all an attempt to remain safe. We can’t cope as we are, so we develop these mechanisms that eventually lead us to take on a completely different identity. While this new identity may feel safe, it is a false safety, and one that completely detaches us from the person we are at our core. In a desperate attempt to protect ourselves, we actually end up abandoning ourselves. It’s a true effort toward survival, but it’s ironically the thing that prevents us from fully living.
So, with this in mind, how do we return home to ourselves? How do we establish trust that we can expose the parts of us we’ve desperately worked to keep hidden? This can be a lengthy process that is not always linear or clear at all times. This is the bulk of what my coaching is about: it’s what set me free in my own recovery from all the things, and is what I’m most passionate about sharing with others, in hopes it might radically change their lives the way it changed mine.
Without the in-depth support and guidance of coaching, there are still ways you can start to do this work on your own, and I’ll share a few exercises that will propel you toward rediscovering your soul’s purpose and live as the magnetic person you are as your authentic self.
- Channeled Journaling: For this exercise, we are channeling our own intuition. We are seeking answers from our highest self, on how to become in alignment with it and our soul’s true purpose. This week’s meditation will walk you through this process, and give you a bit of guidance for how to do it on your own, so I humbly invite you to tune into that on “Soulbriety Segments” on Spotify!
- Mood Tracking: Note when you feel most alive throughout the day: Where are you? Who are you with? What are you doing? What external factors are involved before, during, and after? These answers are breadcrumbs from the universe that lead you toward your truest expression. The more you feel this ping of fulfillment, the more magic and meaning you bring into your life.
- List of Ethics & Moral: Write down your top 5-10 ethics & values. Then, think about ways you uphold these, or possible things you can do in the future to align with these ideas and concepts. When we live in moral alignment with our values, our soul is fulfilled and we can truly thrive!
- 5-Year Visualization: Imagine the specifics of a day in the life of your future self. Where do you live? Who are the key people in your everyday life? What do you do for work? For leisure? From what do you find meaning? These are helpful clues that indicate what actions should be implemented in order to reach the goals of attaining this future.
The bottom line is: YOU are a miracle. There is no one in this world that can live the same life as you in the same way that you can. You have something to offer yourself and others that cannot be replicated. It is your unique self-expression, and in order to embody your authentic self, you have to first know who you are and what you want out of life.
I know things in the past may have clouded the visibility of that person, but they never went anywhere. They’re inside of you, and dying to be unveiled so that you can live in full abundance, happiness, and success. I believe in you with my whole heart, and I hope that this message and the exercises provided will offer help or healing in some way!
